UConn dominates San Diego State 76-59 in national championship game to win fifth title
The University of Connecticut Huskies dominated the San Diego State Aztecs 76-59 in the NCAA Women's Basketball National Championship game Monday night, earning their fifth title in program history.
UConn was led by their superstar senior guard Paige Bueckers, who scored a game-high 25 points and dished out five assists. She was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four.
The Huskies got off to a hot start, building a 48-30 lead at halftime. San Diego State was unable to mount a comeback in the second half as UConn held on to its lead.
UConn also got strong performances from center Olivia Nelson-Ododa, who scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and forwards Aaliyah Edwards and Christyn Williams, who scored 12 and 10 points respectively.
The win marks the 15th NCAA women’s basketball championship for head coach Geno Auriemma, the most in college basketball history. Auriemma is now tied with legendary UCLA men’s basketball coach John Wooden for the most NCAA titles in college basketball history.
UConn also extended its winning streak in the NCAA tournament to 88 games, a feat unmatched in women’s college basketball.
The Huskies now have five national titles in the last seven years, solidifying their status as one of the most dominant programs in college basketball.
