Trump now claims Manhattan DA has DROPPED case against him
On Friday, US President Donald Trump declared that the Manhattan District Attorney had dropped a criminal investigation into his finances.
The New York Times had reported that the DA's office was pursuing an “unprecedented criminal investigation” into the president's business dealings.
However, Trump now claims that the DA's office has dropped the case against him. He said on Twitter: “I have just been informed that the District Attorney of Manhattan has dropped the case against me, a complete and total exoneration.”
The Manhattan DA, Cyrus Vance Jr., has not issued any statement on the matter. However, Trump's lawyer, Jay Sekulow, said the president “was pleased that the investigation had been concluded.”
The case, which is being handled by the DA's office, had been looking into whether Trump or any of his associates had committed any financial crimes. It was also investigating whether Trump's former attorney, Michael Cohen, had violated campaign finance laws by arranging payments to two women who claimed to have had affairs with him.
It is not clear why the DA's office has dropped the case, or if it is indeed true. The Trump administration has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and has accused the DA's office of pursuing a politically motivated investigation.
The investigation into Trump's finances is one of several that the president and his associates have been subjected to in recent months. Special Counsel Robert Mueller is currently investigating alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election.
