Fire Chief: 1 killed, 28 injured in roof collapse during concert at Illinois theater
At least one person is dead and 28 others were injured after a roof collapsed during a concert at an Illinois theater, fire officials said.
The roof at the New Trier High School theater in Winnetka, Illinois, collapsed during an event on Saturday evening, Winnetka-Northfield Fire Chief Robert Tobias told ABC News.
Tobias said that the fire department responded to a call of a “partial roof collapse” around 8 p.m. local time and that the roof had collapsed during a concert at the venue.
At least one person was killed and 28 others were injured, Tobias said. The injured were taken to local hospitals and the condition of those injured was not immediately known.
The cause of the collapse was not immediately known and the Fire Department is still investigating the incident. The National Transportation Safety Board was also notified of the incident and will be investigating.
The theater was evacuated and the concert was cancelled. The theater remained closed on Sunday while the investigation continues.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the victim of this tragic incident,” Tobias said in a statement. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and the injuries suffered by the victims and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families.”
