At least one person was killed and dozens were injured when the roof of an Illinois concert venue collapsed during a severe storm on Saturday night.
The incident occurred at the Tinley Park Convention Center in Tinley Park, Illinois, around 11 p.m. local time, when a severe storm blew through the area. Witnesses said the roof of the venue suddenly collapsed, trapping dozens of people inside.
According to the Tinley Park Police Department, at least one person was killed and more than 20 people were injured. The injured have been taken to local hospitals, and the police are currently investigating the incident.
The concert was part of an outdoor music festival and featured several local bands. There were reportedly more than 500 people in attendance when the roof collapsed.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those affected by this tragedy,” said Tinley Park Mayor Bob Rejda in a statement. “We are doing everything we can to provide support and resources to those who were injured and to their families.”
The cause of the roof collapse is still under investigation. Witnesses said it appeared that the roof had not been properly secured and that the wind caused it to collapse.
The Tinley Park Convention Center has been closed until further notice, and the music festival has been canceled. The concert venue will also be closed until further notice.
