Ro Khanna Endorses Barbara Lee,s Senate Campaign as He Declines to Run

Today, California Representative Ro Khanna has endorsed Democratic Representative Barbara Lee for the US Senate seat, putting to rest speculation that he would run for the seat himself.

In a statement released today, Khanna said he believes Lee is the best candidate to represent California in the Senate. “Barbara Lee is the best candidate to represent California in the Senate. She is a leader in progressive causes, she is a tireless advocate for justice, and she has a proven track record of getting things done,” Khanna said.

Khanna had previously been floated as a potential challenger to Senator Dianne Feinstein, who is up for reelection in 2024. But in his statement today, Khanna made it clear that he will not be running for the Senate.

“I will not be running for the Senate in 2024,” he said. “I am confident that Barbara Lee is the best candidate to carry on our work in the Senate and ensure that California is represented with the values we hold dear.”

Lee, who currently serves as the U.S. Representative for California's 13th congressional district, welcomed Khanna's endorsement.

“I am honored to have the support of Ro Khanna,” Lee said in a statement. “He has been a leader in progressive causes and I am grateful for his endorsement.”

Lee is running for the seat in a crowded primary field, which includes California State Senator Scott Wiener, Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell, and former Secretary of State Alex Padilla.

Khanna's endorsement could give Lee a much-needed boost in the race. Khanna is a popular figure in the state and his endorsement could help Lee stand out in the crowded field.

The race for the Senate seat is expected to be competitive, and Khanna's endorsement could be a deciding factor in who wins the Democratic primary.
