Dr. Patrick Wanis, a human behaviour and relationship expert, has identified the six behaviours that can damage the bond between two people. These include criticism, contempt, defensiveness, stonewalling, invalidation, and evasion.
Criticism involves attacking a person’s character or behaviour in a negative way. This can include making personal comments about a person’s appearance, intelligence, or personality.
Contempt is when one person speaks to the other in a condescending or disrespectful manner. This is often expressed through sarcasm, eye-rolling, or mocking.
Defensiveness is a defensive reaction to criticism or contempt. It can involve blaming the other person for their behaviour or making excuses for their own.
Stonewalling is when one person shuts down communication and refuses to engage with the other. This can create a sense of distance and disconnection between the two people.
Invalidation is when one person denies the other’s feelings or experiences. This can be done through minimising their feelings or making light of their experiences.
Finally, evasion is when one person avoids discussing important issues or topics. This can be done through changing the subject or pretending the issue does not exist.
Dr. Wanis urges couples to be aware of these behaviours and work to avoid them. He believes that by avoiding these behaviours, couples can create a strong and healthy relationship.
