Michael Cohen says this is solely about accountability

Michael Cohen, the former personal lawyer to President Donald Trump, appeared before a House Oversight Committee on Wednesday and had some strong words for his former client.

Cohen, who is currently serving a three-year prison sentence for tax fraud, campaign finance violations and lying to Congress, said that his testimony was “solely about accountability.”

“I am here to tell the truth,” Cohen said. “I have admitted my mistakes and fully accepted responsibility for my wrongdoings. I am ashamed of my own weakness and misplaced loyalty, of the things I did for Mr. Trump in an effort to protect and promote him.”

Cohen went on to call Trump a racist, a conman, and a cheat. He also alleged that Trump had advance knowledge of the 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russian officials, and that Trump was aware of an alleged hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Cohen also detailed his involvement in attempts to suppress negative stories about Trump during the 2016 campaign.

“I am ashamed of my own weakness and misplaced loyalty, of the things I did for Mr. Trump in an effort to protect and promote him,” Cohen said.

He added that he was “ashamed” of his actions and that he was “providing this testimony to shed light on the inner workings of the Trump Organization and its leader.”

Cohen’s testimony was a dramatic departure from the loyalty he expressed for the president for years. He said he was now motivated “solely by the desire to be truthful and to accept responsibility for my actions.”

During his prepared remarks, Cohen expressed regret for his past actions and said that he was now “here to tell the truth.”

“I am here today to tell the truth about Mr. Trump,” Cohen said. “I am here to take responsibility for my own actions. My loyalty to Mr. Trump has cost me everything: my family’s happiness, friendships, my law license, my company, my livelihood, my honor, my reputation and, soon, my freedom.”
