Today in History: March 21, Johann Sebastian Bach is born

Today marks the anniversary of an important figure in the world of classical music: Johann Sebastian Bach was born on this day in 1685. The German composer is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time, and his works have had a profound influence on the western musical tradition.

The son of a town musician, Bach was born in Eisenach, Germany, and received his early education in music from his father and elder brother. He was a child prodigy and was quickly recognized for his exceptional talent, receiving royal patronage and performing for nobility at a young age.

By the age of 18, Bach had already composed several works and was appointed organist of the Church of St. Blasius in Muhlhausen, Germany. Over the next two decades, he continued to compose music and further developed his skills, eventually becoming a well-respected composer and organist.

In 1717, Bach was appointed Kapellmeister of the court of Anhalt-Cöthen, where he composed some of his most well-known works, including the Brandenburg Concertos, The Well-Tempered Clavier, and the Mass in B Minor. He served in Anhalt-Cöthen until 1723, when he was appointed Cantor of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig.

Bach's time in Leipzig was incredibly productive and marked the peak of his career; he wrote over 200 cantatas and composed some of his most famous works, including the St. Matthew Passion and the Christmas Oratorio. He spent the remainder of his life in Leipzig, where he died on July 28, 1750.
