Singapore’s Changi Airport has reclaimed its title as the world’s best airport, according to the World Airport Awards for 2020. The airport had previously held the title for seven consecutive years before losing it to Qatar’s Hamad International Airport in 2019.
The World Airport Awards are based on a survey of 13.82 million passengers from 122 countries. The survey includes airport service and product offerings, which are rated by passengers across 39 different airport service and product categories. The survey covers 550 airports worldwide.
Changi Airport earned the title by outperforming its rivals in a range of categories, including best airport leisure amenities, best airport terminal cleanliness, and best airport immigration service. The airport also ranked highly in the categories of best airport staff service, best airport shopping, and best airport transfer.
The Singaporean airport’s award-winning leisure amenities include a movie theater, a butterfly garden, and a rooftop swimming pool. Its shopping offerings include luxury brands, local souvenirs, and duty-free items. Its immigration service is also fast and efficient, with a self-service kiosk that allows passengers to quickly obtain their gate passes.
The award is a welcome boost for Changi Airport, which has been hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic. The airport has been closed to international arrivals since April, and the number of passengers has dropped by more than 90 percent compared to last year.
