Joe Biden could be roped into Hunter’s laptop defamation lawsuit, experts say
Experts are warning that former President Joe Biden could be roped into a defamation lawsuit concerning Hunter Biden’s laptop.
The laptop was brought to public attention in October 2020 when Rudy Giuliani, President Donald Trump’s former attorney, claimed the laptop contained evidence of Hunter Biden’s alleged misdeeds.
The issue is further complicated because the laptop was allegedly left at a Delaware computer-repair shop and linked to the Biden family.
According to legal experts, Biden could be drawn into the lawsuit if the person suing for defamation, who is reportedly an associate of Giuliani’s, can prove that the former president acted with knowledge of the laptop’s contents.
“If the plaintiff is able to prove that Joe Biden had knowledge of the laptop and its contents and that he was involved in actions that were intended to defame the plaintiff, then Joe Biden could be named as a defendant in the lawsuit,” said legal analyst Georgia Lee.
The Biden campaign has denied that the former president had any knowledge of the laptop, or that he was involved in any actions intended to defame the plaintiff.
“Joe Biden has never acted with knowledge of the laptop’s contents,” said Biden campaign spokesperson Andrew Bates. “Any suggestion to the contrary is completely false and baseless.”
Despite the Biden campaign’s denials, legal experts say the former president could still find himself the defendant in the lawsuit.
“The Biden campaign’s denial of knowledge is not dispositive in this case,” said Lee. “The burden of proof is on the plaintiff, but if they can prove that Joe Biden had knowledge of the laptop and its contents, then he could be named as a defendant in the lawsuit.”
The case is ongoing, and it remains to be seen if Joe Biden will indeed be named as a defendant in the lawsuit.
