Italy bans ChatGPT
The Italian government has issued an order to ban the use of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by Microsoft and the Italian Institute of Technology.
The order states that ChatGPT, which was released in November 2020, “is a tool for generating conversations with a natural language processing system that can be used for false or misleading communication to the public.”
Microsoft and the Italian Institute of Technology have been criticized for developing the chatbot, which some say can be used to spread misinformation and potentially influence public opinion.
The Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research also ordered the suspension of all activities related to the development of ChatGPT, and the closure of the project's website.
The ministry said that ChatGPT's use of natural language processing technology is “not suitable for the purposes of public communication and social media.”
The ministry added that the technology could “lead to serious risks, including the spread of false and misleading information and the manipulation of public opinion.”
