Dutch rail crash: Several hurt as passenger and freight trains collide
Several people have been injured after two trains collided in the Dutch town of Meerssen on Saturday night.
The passenger train, travelling from Maastricht to Heerlen, collided with a freight train near the town's railway station at around 9pm.
According to Dutch railway company NS, four people were taken to hospital with minor injuries, with two of them later released.
NS spokesperson Astrid van Es told Dutch news agency ANP: “The passenger train had 34 passengers on board, of which four were injured. It's still unclear what caused the collision”.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated.
The accident has caused disruption to rail services in the area, with some services being suspended and delays expected.
Local authorities have set up an emergency centre to assist those affected by the incident.
The Dutch Safety Board is investigating the crash and has asked the public to report any information they may have.
