Brazil reintroduces visa requirement for US tourists, others

Brazil has announced it is reintroducing visa requirements for US citizens and other foreign visitors who wish to enter the country.

The Brazilian government said in a statement Tuesday that the visa requirement for US and other foreign tourists would take effect March 1, 2021.

The move is part of the government's effort to combat illegal immigration, the statement said. It did not specify which countries would be required to obtain a visa.

The announcement comes after the Brazilian government implemented a number of restrictions last year in order to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. The government had previously suspended visa requirements for US citizens and some other foreign visitors.

The reintroduction of the visa requirement is the latest in a series of measures Brazil has taken to control immigration. The government has also tightened border security, increased deportations and implemented a number of restrictions on entry into the country.

The statement said the government was “committed to protecting the rights of foreign tourists and will work with the tourism industry to ensure that the visa process is as efficient and simple as possible.”

The reintroduction of the visa requirement for US citizens and other foreign visitors could have an impact on Brazil’s tourism industry, which has been struggling due to the coronavirus pandemic. Tourism is one of Brazil’s main sources of foreign income, and the visa requirement could make it more difficult for visitors to enter the country.

The Brazilian government has not yet announced how the visa requirement will be implemented, or what documents will be required for visitors to obtain a visa. The statement said the government would provide more details in the coming weeks.
