One dead, dozens injured in theatre roof collapse in Illinois
One person is dead and dozens of others are injured after the roof of a theatre in the small town of Mt. Zion, Illinois, collapsed on Wednesday evening.
The tragedy occurred at the Mt. Zion Movie Theatre around 7 p.m. local time. According to local police, the roof of the theatre suddenly collapsed due to heavy snowfall, trapping those inside.
At least one person was killed and 30 others were injured in the incident. Many of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The names of the victims have not yet been released.
The theatre has been closed for renovations for the past year, but the roof was not scheduled to be replaced until next month.
Local authorities are investigating the incident to determine why the roof collapsed. They are also looking into whether the theatre was up to code.
The tragedy has left the small town of Mt. Zion in shock and mourning. The mayor of the town, Justin Taylor, released a statement saying: “Our hearts go out to the victims of this tragedy and their families. We are doing all we can to assist in the investigation and to provide comfort to those affected by this terrible event.”
