The best Main Street in America has been announced for 2023: is yours at the top of the list?

The American Planning Association (APA) recently announced the winners of its annual Great American Main Street Award program, which recognizes outstanding efforts to revitalize and enhance Main Streets across the country. After a rigorous selection process, the APA has named 20 cities and towns as the Best Main Streets in America for 2023.

The award winners were chosen based on their commitment to preserving and enhancing the unique character of their Main Streets while striving to create an inviting and vibrant downtown atmosphere. The APA looks at a variety of criteria, including historic preservation, economic development, design, promotion, and organization.

Of the 20 award-winning Main Streets, seven are located in the Northeast, five are in the Midwest, four are in the South, and four are in the West. New additions to the list include La Crosse, Wisconsin; Northampton, Massachusetts; and Boise, Idaho.

The top Main Street in America for 2023 is La Crosse, Wisconsin. La Crosse is a vibrant city situated on the banks of the Mississippi River and home to a variety of shops, restaurants, galleries, and attractions. The APA praised La Crosse for its ongoing commitment to historic preservation and development initiatives, as well as its dedication to creating a downtown atmosphere that's welcoming to all.

Other notable Main Streets on the list include: Park City, Utah; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Asheville, North Carolina; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Traverse City, Michigan.
