At least 36 individuals have been found dead inside a well at an Indian temple following a devastating collapse on Sunday.
The incident occurred at the Subramaniyapuram temple in the Tamil Nadu state in southern India, where a portion of the structure fell on worshippers and visitors close to the main sanctum. The temple was crowded with devotees who had gathered to celebrate the annual festival of Meenakshi Tirukalyanam.
Eyewitnesses reported that the collapse was preceded by a loud noise and that the section of the temple suddenly came down into the well. The local fire service was dispatched to the scene, where they began the search for survivors. Unfortunately, all they were able to find were 36 bodies.
In addition to those killed, at least 25 people were injured in the collapse. The injured are being treated at nearby hospitals, and the authorities are assisting their families.
