Man Utd 0 Southampton 0: Casemiro sent off for horror tackle as Red Devils drop points against bottom of the league

Manchester United's hopes of closing in on the top four were dealt a blow on Saturday evening, as they were held to a goalless draw by bottom-of-the-table Southampton.

The Red Devils struggled to break down the Saints' resolute defence, and were reduced to 10 men just before the hour mark when Casemiro was given his marching orders for a horror tackle on Ryan Bertrand.

The Brazilian midfielder was initially shown a yellow card for the challenge, but referee Chris Kavanagh changed his decision after consulting with VAR, giving Casemiro his marching orders.

The United defence held firm for the remainder of the match, but the 10 men were unable to find a breakthrough at the other end, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side five points behind fourth-placed Leicester with just four matches left to play.

The draw is a huge boost for Southampton, who remain rooted to the bottom of the table but have now earned points in four of their last five matches.

It was a frustrating evening for United, who lost captain Harry Maguire to an ankle injury in the first half, and will be desperate to get back to winning ways against Aston Villa next week.
