Man Utd player ratings: Casemiro’s wild tackle costs United but Martinez superb against Southampton
Manchester United were dealt a blow in their bid to secure a top four finish in the Premier League after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton at Old Trafford.
Casemiro was the villain of the piece for the Red Devils, as his wild tackle on Shane Long saw him sent off in the first half, leaving his side to battle it out with just 10 men.
However, the tenacious display of United defender Lisandro Martinez was a major plus point on a day that could have been much worse for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
The Argentine international was a rock at the back for United, making a number of crucial interceptions and blocks to keep the Saints at bay. He also did well in his defensive duties, mopping up loose balls and making sure his side remained compact and organised.
Casemiro’s red card was a bitter blow for United, but Martinez’s performance was a major positive. He proved to be a real leader at the back, and his determination and commitment to the cause was a key factor in United’s impressive defensive display.
The draw leaves United still with work to do to claw back the five point gap to fourth placed Leicester, but Martinez’s performance will have given the Red Devils a much needed boost in their bid to secure Champions League football next season.
