MacKinnon, Rantanen lead Avalanche to 5-2 win over Stars

The Colorado Avalanche got a big boost from their top two players in a 5-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night.

Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen each had a goal and two assists to lead the Avalanche to the win. MacKinnon’s goal was the game-winner, and Rantanen added an empty-netter to seal the victory.

The Avalanche got off to a fast start, as MacKinnon and Rantanen each scored in the first period to give the team a 2-0 lead. J.T. Compher added a goal in the second period to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Stars made things interesting in the third period, as Jamie Benn and Alexander Radulov each scored to cut the lead to 3-2. However, the Avalanche held strong and MacKinnon added an insurance goal late in the period to make it 4-2. Rantanen sealed the victory with an empty-netter in the final minute.

The win was the Avalanche’s first in five games and improved their record to 38-18-8. MacKinnon and Rantanen were the stars of the night, combining for eight points.

The Stars, meanwhile, dropped to 36-25-7 with the loss. They will look to rebound on Thursday when they face the St. Louis Blues.
