Thai cuisine is not just street food – this is the message coming from the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 list, with 9 entries for Bangkok and another 9 for Singapore.

This year, an impressive list of top-tier chefs from Thailand, Singapore and elsewhere in Asia have been announced as entries for the prestigious culinary competition. The list includes Bangkok’s R-Haan, a modern Thai restaurant run by Chef Rungthiwa Chummongkhon, who has been hailed as “the future of Thai cuisine”.

Chef Rungthiwa is one of many Thai chefs to have made the list, including Gaggan Anand, who runs the eponymous restaurant in Bangkok and is widely considered to be the godfather of modern Indian cuisine.

The list also includes Singapore’s Candlenut, run by Chef Malcolm Lee, who has been credited with introducing Singaporean cuisine to the world. His dishes are said to be “as comforting as a hug from your grandmother”.
