How designers in Singapore are applying their skills to solve pressing problems, from tackling the waste crisis to serving marginalised communities

As Singapore continues to develop, its citizens are facing a range of complex problems from the waste crisis to serving marginalised communities. Fortunately, a group of innovative designers in the city-state are coming up with creative solutions that are not only tackling these pressing issues, but also improving quality of life and creating more sustainable futures.

One such initiative is the ‘Waste Warriors' project, which was launched by two design students, Soh Ting Yi and Lee Jia Qi. The project was born out of their desire to tackle Singapore's waste crisis, which is a major issue in the city-state. The project is focused on raising awareness of the need to reduce waste, while also encouraging people to engage in more sustainable practices. Through the use of interactive installations and workshops, the duo are helping to educate the public on the importance of waste management and sustainable living.

On the other end of the spectrum, designers in Singapore are also using their skills to help marginalised communities. One example of this is the ‘Power of Design' project, which was initiated by DesignSingapore Council and supported by the National Arts Council. It focuses on providing design solutions to the needs of low-income and vulnerable communities, such as elderly, persons with disabilities and youth. Through this project, designers are creating innovative products and services tailored to the needs of these communities, helping to improve their quality of life and giving them a voice in the design process.

In addition to these two projects, there are numerous other initiatives being undertaken by designers in Singapore. They are working to develop new technologies and create more sustainable cities, while also trying to bridge the gap between the traditional and modern worlds. By applying their skills to solve pressing problems, they are helping to create a better future for the people of Singapore.
